Synopsis
NYPD BLUE is the new police drama from Steven Bochco Productions which reunites Bochco with former Hill Street Blues writer and co-executive producer David Milch. Milch and Bochco serve as executive producers of the series. NYPD BLUE stars David Caruso (Mad Dog and Glory) as Detective John Kelly, a dedicated cop who rose quickly through the ranks, earning his detective shield when he was only 28 years old. His career achievement, however, seems to have come at the expense of his marriage. Early in the series, Kelly must deal with the possibility of divorce, not only from his wife but from his long-time partner. Dennis Franz (Hill Street Blues) stars as Detective Andy Sipowicz, a veteran, tough-as-nails cop and Kelly's partner and mentor. Sipowicz isn't the type to hold his tongue or his temper when confronted. In the series' early episodes, Sipowicz' drinking problem and a dangerous, personal vendetta against a notorious mob figure put his future on the force in jeopardy. Being married to a cop for six years has taken its toll on Laura Kelly, a beautiful young attorney, played by co-star Sherry Stringfield. Laura has asked John to move out and has filed for divorce, although she obviously still loves him. Amy Brenneman co-stars as Officer Janice Licalsi, a policewoman working out of the same precinct as Detective Kelly, who doesn't waste any time trying to take Laura's place in John's life. James McDaniel (Malcolm X) co-stars as Lieutenant Arthur Fancy, the tightly wound, by-the-book precinct commander whose job is to keep his over-zealous officers in check. Nicolas Turturro co-stars as streetwise detective James Martinez. NYPD BLUE's early episodes were directed by Gregory Hoblit, an eight-time Emmy® winner (including four for Hill Street Blues), who also serves as the series' co-executive producer. Michael Robin is the supervising producer and Ted Mann is the producer.
